Picnic Friday

The Allegheny Community Center will have its annual Betts Park Picnic at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29. The public is invited for picnic fun and relaxation. Kick back after the meal and listen to live music by Bobbie Lawson and friend. Cost will be $6 at the door. The menu will include hamburgers and hot dogs with baked beans, potato salad and chips with punch bowl cake for dessert. Sign up by calling 723-3237 .

Free books for teachers

and non-profits

Teachers and non-profit organizations in Warren County are eligible to apply for free books from Hooked on Books for Kids of Erie if 70 percent of the students in their school or 70 percent of the children they serve qualify as economically underprivileged. Teachers may distribute these books to pupils in their classes; non-profits may distribute them to children and/or youth in their organizations between the ages of birth and 18. Hooked on Books, a non-profit organization dedicated to literacy, has been granted 40,000 brand new books by First Book of Washington, D.C., and will distribute the books, published by Disney/Hyperion, on Oct. 11 at the Shred-X Warehouse, 2952 West 22nd St., Erie from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. To quality, teachers and non-profits must register with First Book on or before Sept. 15. Registrants will be notified by email of their time slot for selecting books, depending on when they registered. Music in the Park

Friday’s Music in the Park will feature the classic rock of “Chaz” from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Soldiers & Sailors Park, Hickory St. at Pennsylvania Ave. W., Warren. The summer concerts are sponsored by Northwest Savings Bank.

Turkey party

Fire Services will be needed for the Ham and Turkey Party to be held Sunday, Aug. 31, to benefit the Pennsylvania State Championship Fishing Tournament. The event will be held at Tidioute Fire Hall with doors open at 6:30 p.m. and games starting at 7:30 p.m.

Polka Sunday

The Slovenian Polka Boosters will have a John Berne Dance from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, at Maples Inn, Crosby, Pa. Music will be provided for all types of dancing. The public is invited. For information, call Paul Leofsky at 563-7516.

Hot dogs Friday

The Therapeutic Activities Group of BEi will man the hot dog wagon at Thorne’s BiLo Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The public is invited to stop by for a hot dog and pop.
