Warren 3rd at megamatch

NORTH EAST- Warren took advantage of a pair of top-five individual performances en route to a third-place finish at Thursday’s girls golf megamatch at Green Meadows Golf Course in North East.

Megan Smoulder continued her hot start with a round of 41, good for a second place tie with Villa Maria’s Annie Ciacchini. Freshman teammate Rachel Wilson was only one stroke behind with her season-low of 42.

Rounding out the Lady Dragons’ golfers were Abby Cromwell and Clancy Fyock, each shooting 54, and Libby Hammond at 55.

“We keep hanging in there against really respectable teams from Erie that have depth and respectable state rankings,” said Warren coach Tom Smoulder. “With Meg and Rachel firing low forties and the others playing the way they have, this could be our year to go past Districts as a team.”

Villa took home the team title for the third-straight match with a score of 176. McDowell shot a 186 followed by Warren at 191, Mercyhurst Prep at 199, Fort LeBoeuf at 201, Union City at 202 and Strong Vincent at 268.

Mercyhurst Prep’s Grace Brzozowski shot the day’s low round of 37

The Lady Dragons will have a quick turnaround as they head to the Hickory Invitational Friday morning.
