John E. Zook, 77, of 307 W. Hemlock Avenue, Kane, passed away Wednesday (August 20, 2014) at UPMC Hamot in Erie.
Born September 11, 1936, in Kane, he was a son of the late John E. and Ruth Gilbert Zook. On December 26, 1959, in Kane, he married Sandra Orcutt who survives.
John, a wellknown Kane businessman, was the owner of Zook Motors which is one of Kane’s oldest businesses. He was very active and communityminded and was always there to help or give to the community in so many different ways. Zook Motors could always be counted on when a cause was at hand and money had to be raised.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church where he formerly served as an elder, a Sunday School teacher and belonged to the choir. He was a member of the Kane Elks # 329 , the Elks bowling league and the American Legion Post #250. He served in the U.S. Army in the period following the Korean War.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, Sandy, are four children, Sue (Glen) Wilson of Kane, Pami (Gary) Dick of Cranberry Township, John “Jay” (Wendi) Zook of Richmond, VA and Ken (Carrie) Zook of Kane; thirteen grandchildren; one great grandchild; a sister Janet Barger of Bethel Park; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert E. Zook and Bruce G. Zook; and a sister, Lt. Cmdr. Joan Zook.
Friends will be received at the Cummings Funeral Home, Inc. 151 Greeves St., Kane, PA on Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. where an Elks service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Rebecca Taylor, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in John’s name to the Presbyterian Church, 103 Greeves St., Kane, PA 16735.
