Library offers adult photo contest

Attention all amateur photographers! The second annual photography event will be held at the Warren Public Library, aimed exclusively at adults. This contest is open to Warren County residents ages 20 and older.

All photographs must be taken in Warren County and must be matted, framed and labeled as to when and where the photograph was taken as well as what camera was used. Photographers may enter one photograph in a maximum of three of the following categories: Nature & Landscape, Animals, People, Travel & Place, Flowers, Details & Macro, Man-Made, and Digital Darkroom. Visit the Warren Library website (warrenlibrary.org) for more information.

All entries must be delivered to the Wetmore Gallery on the third floor of the Library on Monday or Tuesday, Sept. 29-30, between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. All the entries will be on display in the gallery throughout October. Judging will conclude by Oct. 25, and an awards reception will occur in the gallery on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at 6:30 p.m. Ribbons will be awarded in each category. The first place winner in each category will be entered in the Best of Show judging. Cash prizes will be awarded to the Best of Show winners as follows: Best of Show First Place: $100; Best of Show Second Place: $75; Best of Show Third Place: $50; Best of Show Crowd Pleaser: $25. Following the Oct. 28 award ceremony the photographers should pick up their entries.

Categories will include: Nature & Landscape: These photos include landscapes, outdoor scenes, nature images, sunsets, urban landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes, farms, etc. These images showcase outdoor beauty.

Animals: These contest entries are images of all kinds of animals. They can be pictures of pets – dogs and puppies, cats and kittens, birds, reptiles, amphibians – as well as photos of wildlife, zoo life, farm / domesticated animals, and even insects.

People: These are pictures of people in all walks of life – parenting and family, children, cute baby pics, couples and relationships, models / fashion, people engaged in fun outdoor activities, etc.

Travel & Place: This category includes images that express the joys and adventures of travel photography, showcasing place as an important part of the photo. Note: if you enter a photo into this category, it’s a good idea to include the place name in the title or description of your photo. This category can include landscapes, outdoor scenes, nature images, urban landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes, people, details… any subject you might encounter while traveling, as long as the photo expresses a sense of place. If the photo could have been taken anywhere, it doesn’t belong in this category.

Flowers: We are looking for really interesting, unique, and beautiful pictures of flowers in this category. They can be shot outdoors, photographed in the studio, or in an arrangement on your kitchen table… and at any angle of view.

Details & Macro: Getting in close is the name of the game for this category. We welcome pictures of small details that suggest a larger story. This is also the place for macro photographs. (Note: a macro image of a flower is better placed in the Flowers category, unless it is so close that it becomes abstract and looks little like a recognizable flower). Detail photos might be of a knot, a lock, or an abstract close-up. Anything goes as long as it is a tight composition of a detail. Macro – insects, coins, clocks, stamps, ice crystals, etc.

Man-Made This category is for: Transportation – trains, planes, cars, etc., Architecture, Industry, and Cityscapes.

Digital Darkroom: This category is appropriate for digital art – images created or drastically altered in software like Adobe Photoshop. Although digitally manipulated images are also allowed in the above categories, this is a category exclusively showcasing such art. If the digital darkroom work is the main attraction of the photo, or plays a big part, enter it here.
