Fairview tops Warren in girls tennis opener
Warren suffered a sweep at the hands of visiting Fairview to open the 2014 campaign Monday at the Betts Park Courts.
Top Lady Dragon senior Alexis Vavala dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to veteran Amy Matczak of Fairview. Megan Waterfield dropped a 6-1, 6-0 match to Stephanie Ace and Kim Parroccini fell 6-1, 6-1 to Shannon Sertz.
“All three singles starters are seniors and are new to the position. I did see some good things out there and all of our girls responded well to on-court coaching,” said Warren coach Jeff Bartsch. “Our girls will get better each time out.”
Warren’s doubles pair of sisters Marybeth and Maria Miller took the first set before dropping the second and third.
“The third set was Kocjancic and Klemm as the Fairview girls beat us to the net and banged away all short volleys and overheads,” said assistant coach John Parroccini. “This was an outstanding first match for freshman Marybeth as she played exceptionally well in that first set.”
Warrens’ top doubles team of Rachel Cecco and Morgan Lemmon dropped a hard-fought 6-1, 6-1 decision to Erin Gleason and Julie Schwartz.
The Dragons fared better in exhibition play as they prevailed in three doubles matches. Winning in doubles matches were seniors Phoebe Nelson with Madalyn Harding, sophomores Rachel Cecco with Morgan Lemmon, and Phoebe Nelson with freshman Abbie Buerkle.
New this year, the Dragons are competing in District 10 Class AAA along with McDowell, Central, Fairview, and Oil City.
Also new this season is a co-op with Eisenhower High School. Bartsch and Parroccini are encouraging interested girls in grades 9-12 at Ike to contact the coaching staff.
On Wednesday, the Dragons will travel to Erie’s Pennbriar Club to take on two-time defending PIAA Class AA State Champion Mercyhurst Prep. On Friday, Warren hosts McDowell at the Betts Courts beginning at 4 p.m.
