Lady Dragons finish second at Downing

ERIE-The Lady Dragons’ golf team followed up their strong start to the 2014 season by finishing first among Region 3 teams and second overall Monday at Downing Golf Course in Erie.

Megan Smoulder shot the day’s low round for the second match in a row, this time tying Fort LeBoeuf’s Carly Yovich at 42. Rachel Wilson played solid in the two-spot for Warren with a round of 44, Libby Hammond shot a 51, and Abby Cromwell finished at 58.

Warren’s team score of 195 matched McDowell to force a tiebreaker scenario between the teams’ fifth golfers. Clancy Fyock’s round of 61 beat a 66 from McDowell’s fifth to give the Lady Dragons first place in the region.

Villa Maria took advantage of playing on its home course to finish first in both Class AA and overall with a score of 177. Warren and McDowell placed second and third overall at 195 followed by Mercyhurst Prep at 198, Union City and Fort LeBoeuf at 209, and Strong Vincent at 305. Meadville and North East did not register team scores.

Trailing Smoulder and Yovich was Lia Fatica (Villa Maria) and Michaela Redinger (independent) at 43 as well as Wilson (Warren) and Annie Ciacchini (Villa Maria) at 44.

“When practice is over I have girls walking to the driving range,” said Warren coach Tom Smoulder. “When our bus pulled in today I had some going to the course. Their motivation and effort is driving this team to have some real success. I am extremely proud to be coaching these girls.”

The Lady Dragons will have back-to-back matches later in the week as they visit North East on Thursday before taking part in the Hickory Invitational on Friday.
