Golf results

The 2014 Men’s Steeplechase Championship came to a thrilling finish on Sunday at Conewango Valley Country Club.

Long-shot Joe Bellitto joined the Men’s Club Champion Joe Nelson, and former club Steeplechase Champion/Club Champion Dick Cole, for the final two holes. Bellitto relinquished his position on the second to last hole, setting up the match between Nelson and Cole. Nelson captured the event with a par 4 on the last hole.

This event concluded a sweep for Nelson for 2014 for the major club events at Conewango Valley Country Club. He was recently crowned Men’s Club Champion and now the Men’s Steeplechase Champion.

The Steeplechase event showcases the best golfers at Conewango Valley in a single-elimination per hole format. Nelson finished ahead of Cole and Bellitto was third. Jerry Bancroft was fourth, Dave Walde fifth, Anthony Pellegrino sixth, Don Dubia seventh, Tyler Martin and Mike Barber tied for eighth, Mike Bancroft and Dennis Boron tied for 10th, and Tony Pellegrino Sr. and Nate Sandberg tied for 12th.

CVCC member Ken Hoffman and his guest Mark Urbanski came roaring back with a final round 16-under-par 55 to capture the Conewango Valley Country Club Senior Member-Guest Golf Tournament on Saturday by one stroke over former champion John Zawacki and his guest, Dave Brandhorst.

The event featured nine holes of net scramble, nine holes of modified alternate shot and 18 holes of net better ball.

Hoffman and Urbanski finished at 122, ahead of:

Flight 1: 1. Bob McGinn/Terry English 124; 2. Joe Hedman/Joe Saber 126

Flight 2: 1. John Zawacki/Dave Brandhorst 123; 2. Jim Senger/Jerry Nelson 126

Flight 3: 1. Bob Follett/Phil Holland 124; 2. Jim Phillips/Dan Hocking 127

Denny Ayers shot the nine-hole low gross of 36, and Cliff Jenkins the low net of 31, on Friday in the Cable Hollow Senior Men’s Golf League. Bob Lindmark had the most points at 9.0, Pete Hofert the most pars at seven, and Ayers had two birdies. One birdie each was shot by: Jim Scalise, Jim Terrill, Jon Nelson, Jim Swick, Pat Hultquist, Bob Buerkle, Val Condio, Dave Peck, Ken Williams, and Tom Swanson.

Benefit 5K

The Fall Family Five, presented by Kwik Fill, to benefit Family Services of Warren County, will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, beginning at Family Services, 589 Hospital Drive (at Warren State Hospital.
