Parks and Rec panel gets projects update
The City of Warren Parks and Recreation Committee received updates on several ongoing projects Tuesday afternoon during the its bi-monthly meeting.
Mike Holtz, director of the Department of Public Works, said that a contract has been awarded to update the restrooms at the municipal pool, which haven’t been updated since they were built in 1967.
He said the work will begin in the week following Labor Day.
Mary Ann Nau, city administrator, said the YMCA reported that it has enough personnel to staff the pool through mid- to late August. The staffing of the pool is an issue every year because of the timing of school openings in late summer.
The tennis and basketball courts at Beaty Field are nearing completion. He said that scratch coats of asphalt have been applied, and the fencing will be put back in place after the “tennis coatings” are applied. The new coatings will be blue and white, as opposed to the traditional green and white. The tennis coats will be applied following a 25-day cured of the scratch coat.
Tennis court reservation fees have not yet been established, and Nau said she would have something for the committee at the next meeting. Holtz added that fees were for court reservations, not for individual play.
He said that there is an issue with wet conditions at the fitness park at DeFrees Park, as the surface can be negatively affected by excess water.
Nau reported that the city intern, Greg Wilson, has been doing extensive work on the city’s website and Facebook pages, including updated Parks and Recreation pages on the website.
She said there will be a link on the site to the Walkable Warren document.
