‘Make it Rain’ at Chapman State Park this weekend
The following events are planned at Chapman State Park this weekend:
“Make it Rain” will be the topic of a program from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday. Rain Sticks were traditionally used by many Native American tribes in ceremonies designed to bring rain after long periods of drought. Yours may not bring on the rain, but they will create the pleasant sound of water falling. Meet at the Beach Concession stand.
Also Friday, “Step Into the Night Hike” will take place from 9 to 10:30 p.m. As the sun sets and the light fades from the sky, the day animals retire and a new group of animals awakens. We will explore the world of the crepuscular (active at dusk and dawn) and the nocturnal (active at night) animals. Bring your bug spray and sense of adventure as we explore the darkness for nature’s night lights. Meet at the park amphitheater.
Saturday’s activities will include “Beginning Kayaking” from 10 a.m. to noon. Come to the Beach Concession Stand for a lesson on basic boating safety and then take a kayak tour on the lake and the creek. Pre-registration is REQUIRED as kayaks are limited. You may bring your own kayak, but you must still register. Registration can be made by calling the park office at (814) 723-0250 by Friday, August 8, 2014.
A “Nature Walk” will take place from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday. Nature walks highlight what is met along the trail. This walk will feature the Nature Trail which is 1.2 miles long. Please wear sturdy shoes as the trail has some hills and can be muddy at times. Meet at the Amphitheater.
A non-denominational worship service will be held at park amphitheater at 10 a.m. Sunday.
The concession stand, with boat rentals, snacks, ice, firewood and more, is open from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and noon to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday (closed Tuesdays). Use your camping receipt to receive a 10-percent discount on boat and bike rental.
