Warren holds on to defeat Williamsport

GREENSBURG – Win and move on.

It wasn’t pretty, but that’s what Warren’s Girls Majors All-Stars did on Friday, holding off Williamsport, 8-7, to move to the winners bracket final of the PA Little League state tournament.

Warren led 8-4 entering the top of the sixth, and held off a furious rally, with catcher Gracie Wood throwing out the potential tying run at second to end the game.

Warren led 4-0 after one inning, with Alexis Nyquist, Julia Lobdell, Celia Chase, Wood, and Kiersten Hoffman getting base hits without an out. Up 2-0, and with the bases loaded, the Williamsport pitcher tried to get Chase at home. Chase slid and beat the throw, which got away from the catcher, also allowing Wood to score.

Williamsport trailed 4-3 after scoring three times with two outs in the top of the second. After three hits and two walks, Warren got out of it when Wood chased down a wild pitch and threw to starting pitcher Julia Lobdell at the plate, who held on for the third out.

After two outs, Warren scored twice more in the bottom half. Chase and Wood singled and Hoffman walked, which set up Ellie Lobdell’s two-run single up the middle.

Williamsport and Warren each scored one run in the third. Two hits and an error gave Williamsport one, and an error scored Nyquist in the bottom of the third for a 7-4 Warren lead.

Wood, Hoffman and Ellie Lobdell had consecutive hits in the fourth for an 8-4 Warren lead.

After two walks to start the top of the fourth for Julia Lobdell, Trinity Wennberg relieved and got three straight outs, two via strikeout. Wennberg retired eight straight before trouble with two outs in the sixth.

Three straight Williamsport singles brought the tying run to the plate. Up 8-5 with two on, a single scored two and second baseman Lexi Head threw home to try to get the trail runner. She was safe, but Wood gunned down to shortstop Nyquist to nail the batter and potential tying run trying to move up to second base.

That ended the game and pits Warren vs. Exton (Section 8) in the winners bracket final at 11 a.m. Saturday at the West Point Little League Complex in Greensburg. Exton was a 3-0 winner on Friday over defending state champion Bob Horlacher Little League.

Wood was 3-for-3 with three runs, Nyquist 3-for-3 with two runs, Chase 2-for-3 with two runs, Hoffman 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBI, and Ellie Lobdell 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Lobdell battled through three complete innings, giving up four runs, but only one earned run. Wennberg relieved her in the fourth and struck out four in three innings for the save.

Grace Wortman had four assists and one putout from third base in the win.
