Girls Majors open state tourney with win over host West Point
GREENSBURG – Warren’s Girls Majors All-Stars brought their bats to states, riding two five-run innings to a 12-7 win over West Point to open the PA Little League state tournament Thursday.
Warren led 7-1 after three innings and 12-3 after six, fending off host team West Point, which scored four runs and left the bases loaded in the top of the sixth inning.
Warren starting pitcher Julia Lobdell allowed one run through four innings before getting into trouble in the fifth and sixth innings. West Point put runners on every inning, but Lobdell gutted through singles and walks to leave with the lead with one out and four runs in in the sixth. Trinity Wennberg relieved Lobdell and got the final two outs by strikeout and a nice lunging catch on a popup at the mound. She left the bases loaded for the save.
Alexis Nyquist started the game by getting hit by a pitch and Julia Lobdell walked. Celia Chase beat out a bunt to load the bases before Gracie Wood knocked in the first run with a sacrifice fly. After Kiersten Hoffman brought in two with an RBI single and a throwing error on the third baseman, Ellie Lobdell blasted a two-run home run over the left-center field fence for a 5-0 lead.
Warren second baseman Lexi Head had a nice double play on a tag and throw to first in the first inning. And Julia Lobdell worked her way out of trouble in the second after the first two batters singled.
Nyquist doubled to start the second for Warren, but was thrown out at third. After Julia Lobdell reached by walk, Wood doubled her in with two outs, but she was also thrown out at third.
Marissa Grubbs’ RBI single with two outs in the third, scoring Hoffman after a lead-off single, gave Warren a 7-1 lead. West Point had put two hits together in the top of the third to get on the board.
West Point (Section 2) put together three walks and two hits, including its only extra-base hit of the game by Tiffany Bruzda, to cut the lead to 7-3 after four-and-a-half.
As it turns out, Warren would need the insurance runs in the bottom half of the fifth.
With one out, Jordan Sitler reached on an error by the shortstop and Kelsey Stuart walked. Wennberg beat out a bunt to load the bases to set up the top of the order. Nyquist’s three-run double made it 10-3 Warren, and Chase added a two-run triple two batters later.
With two-outs and one on, five straight West Point batters reached (three walks, an infield hit, and an error) before Wennberg got the final two outs with the bases loaded.
Nyquist was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI, Chase 2-for-3 with two RBI, Ellie Lobdell had two RBI on one swing, and Julia Lobdell walked three times with two runs. Hoffman was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.
District 10 and Section 1 champion Warren is 8-0 in tournament play and advances to play Williamsport (Section 3) at 11 a.m. Friday at the West Point Little League Complex in Greensburg.
