Judith B. Acklin

Judith Ann Brown Acklin, 75, a resident of Warren County since 1963, died July 6, 2014 of a hardfought struggle with cancer.

The oldest daughter of Robert N. and Micha Elizabeth Brown, she was born February 12, 1939 in Wellsburg, WV. She graduated from Coraopolis Senior High in 1957 and attended nurses training at Presbyterian University Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. She also attended art classes at Carnegie Museum, and the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, FL.

Married to Frank B. Acklin (surviving), they moved from Pittsburgh to Warren County and raised their three children, Craig R. Acklin (Julie) of Jamestown NY, Jennifer B Acklin of Ellicottville NY, and Tracy E. Acklin of Warren PA. Also surviving are her two grandsons, Ryan F. Acklin of Pittsburgh, PA and Evan J. Acklin of Jamestown, NY., her sister Janet Dunkle of Warren, PA with whom she was very close, and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Her parents Robert N. and Micha Elizabeth Brown, sister Joyce Kozak, and nephew Charles Dunkle precede her in death.

Judy worked most of her career in the nursing profession as an LPN, as a private duty nurse and for the Youngsville doctors’ office. In retirement, she worked at Ring Around A Rosy, and enjoyed her numerous flower gardens. She was a member of the Warren Garden Club, and had been a previous member of the Moon Township Garden Club with her mother and sister Janet.

She was a talented artist, and loved to paint in her home studio. She was an avid crocheter, reader, lifelong Steeler fan, and she loved to ski and travel. Her favorite retreat was in the Adirondak Mountains, camping and canoeing with Frank, family and friends, and her wonderful companion Boomer, their dear black Lab.

Judy skied with her family at Peak n’ Mountain / Buckaloons, and spent many weekends watching her son Craig and daughter Jennie race at HoliMont, Kissing Bridge, Cockaigne, Peek n’ Peak, and Holiday Valley. She was a master of crockpot lunches at the slopes, with her sister Janet’s help!

Judy was kind and thoughtful beyond words, and everyone who knew her will miss her enormously.

A candlelight memorial service is planned for Sunday July 20, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 300 Market St., Warren Pa. All who knew her and loved her are welcome to attend. A reception will follow the service. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Warren, PA.

A Memorial Scholarship has been established through Warren County Community Foundation. Contributions can be made to the Judith B. Acklin Memorial Scholarship Fund, PO Box 691, Warren PA 16365 (Please be sure to designate her memorial fund in the memo line). In lieu of flowers, Judy would want donations made to The Warren Public Library or the Warren County Humane Society in her name.
