ETHS photo reception, open house planned

The public is invited to an evening of fun on Saturday, July 12, at 7 p.m. to view the photographs that will be on display. Prize ribbons will be in place to honor the winning photos having been chosen by this year’s three judges Jonathan Hart, Judy Barrett and Ron Maier. A basket raffle will benefit the Elk Township Historical Society (ETHS), and there will be finger food, wine and punch.

Guest speaker will be Matthew D. Rector, a historic preservation specialist who works at the U.S. Army Garrison at Fort Knox, Ky. As a member of the Cultural Resources Office, he will share his knowledge of Fort Knox history. For more than 10 years, he has studied the history of the WWII Axis POW Camp and has become acquainted with former prisoners and their families. Rector is a 2002 graduate of Ball State University’s Historic Preservation Program and the author of “Images of America: The United States at Fort Knox.”

Also, ETHS tour guides will be available this Saturday afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m. for this month’s open house. Come visit to see and hear information about the restored 1870s schoolroom, the museum which shows early rural family farm life and the community center as well as library which provides activities and programs for all ages.

The public is invited.
