Warren Boys Juniors sent to losers bracket final after walk-off loss
Jordan Frano’s two-out, walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted DuBois to a 4-3 victory over Warren in an exciting Boys Juniors All-Stars game held Monday at Old Legion Field.
Warren struck first in the game, pushing two runs across in the top of the first inning. With one out, Bryce Cummings reached on an infield single and advanced to second base when his brother Austyn was hit by a pitch. After Evan Tremblay walked, Adam Barker hit a line drive single to right, scoring both Bryce and Austin Cummings and giving Warren a 2-0 lead.
Warren would hold on to that lead until the bottom of the fourth inning. DuBois was finally able to score on Warren starting pitcher Matt Leonard, tallying three runs in the frame thanks to Jack Mohney’s RBI single, Buddy Lines’ RBI sacrifice fly, and Coy Donahue’s run-scoring single.
DuBois’ lead was very brief. With one out in the top of the fifth, Nate Betts reached on an infield single. Bryce Cummings followed with a walk, and Austyn Cummings then sliced a double to left which scored Betts and tied the game at three runs apiece.
The score remained tied until Frano’s heroics in the bottom of the seventh, but both teams came close to scoring in the previous innings. Derek Knapp, who replaced Leonard on the mound in the sixth, stranded two DuBois runners in the bottom of the sixth. Warren also left potential runs on the bases, stranding men in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh innings.
Leonard pitched effectively for Warren, tossing five and one-third innings while striking out six batters. Knapp also threw well, allowing one unearned run in his one and one-third innings on the hill.
Warren’s offense was led by Barker, who knocked in two runs, and Austyn Cummings, who reached base three times. Lines, Daron Walker, and Thomas Greco each reached base two times each for DuBois.
Warren will return to action on Wednesday, facing St. Marys at a yet-to-be-determined site in the losers bracket final. St. Marys beat Bradford, 12-11, in a comeback win on Monday.
