States up next for Girls Majors All-Stars
DuBOIS – Warren’s Girls Majors All-Stars continued to play well in all three facets of the game – pitching, defense and hitting, and brought a Section 1 title home from DuBois on Saturday.
With a 12-2 win over Franklin on Saturday afternoon, Warren improves to 7-0 in Little League All-Star Tournament play, adding a Section 1 championship to the District 10 championship already won.
The 11-and-12-year-old all-stars went 3-0 at sections held in DuBois, beating Franklin, 10-0, Cochranton, 10-5, and Franklin again, 12-2, in the final. Warren has outscored opponents 72-12 over seven games. Much like Warren’s first game at districts, the team overcame an early 2-0 deficit in the section championship and scored in four of six innings.
Ellie Lobdell blasted an inside-the-park home run to deep left-center field in the top of the second inning to cut the lead to 2-1 and Lexi Head followed with a hustle triple. Head would score on a dropped third strike to tie the game.
Much like it has in both tournaments, Warren put together a two-out rally in the third inning.Gracie Wood’s RBI single and a two-run triple from Ellie Lobdell gave Warren a 5-2 lead, and Warren kept up the scoring in the fourth.
Grace Wortman singled and moved to second when Trinity Wennberg was hit by a pitch. Alexis Nyquist followed with a two-run single, and Julia Lobdell and Kiersten Hoffman added RBI singles in the four-run inning.
Nyquist had another of her three hits to start the top of the sixth and scored on Celia Chase’s RBI single. Wood finished the scoring with an RBI triple, and she later scored for the 12-2 decision.
After allowing two unearned runs on a double in the first, Julia Lobdell allowed just two more hits and five walks in the game, striking out nine, including the game’s final batter. Lobdell gave up one earned run in 16 innings at sections.
Warren catcher Gracie Wood gunned down two Franklin runners attempting to steal.
Nyquist finished 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot and had eight hits in three section games. Ellie Lobdell had two hits and three RBI on Saturday, and Wood two hits and two RBI.
Warren advances to the Little League Pennsylvania Girls Majors state tournament beginning Thursday in Greensburg.
