Girls Majors 10-run Franklin to open section tournament

DUBOIS – The Warren Girls Majors All-Stars stayed unbeaten in the postseason with a 10-0 win over Franklin to open the Pennsylvania Little League Section 1 Tournament on Tuesday.

Warren is now 5-0 after winning four straight in the District 10 North/South Tournament and has outscored opponents 50-5, winning three of five games via mercy rule.

Alexis Nyquist got her team off to a fast start with a leadoff double in the top of the first inning. Nyquist came around to score on a wild pitch for the game’s first run, and Kiersten Hoffman connected on an RBI double that scored Gracie Wood with two outs.

It was Trinity Wennberg that sparked a two-out rally in the second when she reached on an error, giving Warren its first baserunner of the inning. Nyquist followed with a single, Julia Lobdell drove in Wennberg on an error by the Franklin shortstop, and Celia Chase brought in another with an RBI base hit.

Wood kept the momentum rolling with a triple that scored a pair of runs and Hoffman delivered again – this time with a triple to score Wood and make it a 7-0 Warren advantage.

The 10-run rule came into play in the third inning when Nyquist ripped a two-run double, scoring Lexi Head and Grace Wortman. Nyquist made it home safely on a fielder’s choice by Lobdell to bring the lead to 10-0.

Franklin advanced a runner to third in the bottom of the fourth inning and nearly extended the game, but Hoffman ended the threat with a running catch into right field to end the inning.

Lobdell tossed all four innings in the circle, striking out six batters while allowing two hits and two walks. She now has a postseason record of 5-0 with just three earned runs in 22 innings pitched.

Nyquist was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles to lead Warren at the plate. Chase and Hoffman each went 2-for-3 with Hoffman picking up five total bases.

Warren will return to DuBois on Wednesday to square off against Cochranton in the winner’s bracket final at 7:30 p.m. Cochranton was a 10-0 winner over Harborcreek in the early game Tuesday.
