School directors set closing date for Allegheny Valley Elementary
While the rough winter Warren County experienced this year bought Allegheny Valley Elementary School an additional semester as a school, that semester is looking like the end.
The Warren County School District board of directors approved a motion on Monday to close the school and a separate resolution to formally re-assign the students from AVES to the Sheffield K-12 school effective next January.
Referencing the closure hearing held June 4, 2012 for elementary schools throughout the district including AVES, Russell, Sugar Grove, Sheffield and South Street, the text of the measure approved said that the board “orders the closure of Allegheny Valley Elementary School due to the declining enrollment within the District and in order to implement the September 2008 Warren County School District Master Facilities plan, as amended.”
That plan, in short, paved the way for K-12 schools to be located at the Eisenhower and Sheffield sites with the corresponding closure of elementary schools in those attendance areas.
The resolution assigning eastern attendance area students to the K-12 campus states that “the Board has received sufficient evidence that the Sheffield K-12 School will be completed prior to January 27, 2015, and will be capable of housing the students that other wise would have attended the Allegheny Valley Elementary School, the board had determined that it is in the best interest of the Warren County School District to reassign said students to the Sheffield K-12 School commencing on January 27, 2015, and continuing thereafter.”
The board was informed at committee meetings in March that the elementary addition would not be completed for the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year. District officials reported that there was four feet of frost under the concrete slab of the addition and that the architect on the project requested “suspension of work due to unfavorable conditions.”
District officials estimated at that time that the work would be slowed for 30 to 60 days to allow the ground to thaw.
