Warren Girls Majors win North/South Little League title

It’s been quite a run so far for the Warren Girls Majors All-Stars.

Warren claimed the District 10 North/South Championship with a four-inning, 10-0 mercy-rule win over DuBois Friday at Hawbaker Field. The victory capped a 4-0 run through the district tournament for the Warren team, which travels to DuBois next week for the Pennsylvania Little League Section 1 Tournament.

On Friday, Warren had all the offense it would need after two innings. Neither team scored in the first, and starting pitcher Julia Lobdell worked out of a second-and-third jam with the aid of a 6-2 one-out putout from Alexis Nyquist to Gracie Wood that saved a run heading into the home half.

Ellie Lobdell led the inning off by taking first on a dropped third strike and Lexi Head followed with a long at-bat – fouling off a half dozen or so pitches – that resulted in a walk to put runners on first and second. Grace Wortman grounded into a fielder’s choice that allowed Lobdell to score all the way from second for a 1-0 lead.

Warren struck quickly in the third thanks to a leadoff home run down the left field line by Nyquist, who scored standing up. Julia Lobdell drew a walk and advanced to third on a sac bunt by Celia Chase before scoring on an RBI single by Wood. With two outs, Ellie Lobdell connected on a deep line drive to right field and legged out the inside-the-park homer to make it a 5-0 Warren advantage.

The momentum was in Warren’s favor on both sides of the game, and the hosts kept it rolling in the bottom of the fouth.

Marissa Grubbs singled in her first at-bat and Nyquist was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. With no outs, Jordan Sitler laid a bunt down the third-base line that brought in Grubbs when the ball was thrown into right field. Chase followed with an infield single to score Nyquist, and Wood drove Sitler home with a double to deep center field.

The table was set with runners on second and third and no outs for Kiersten Hoffman, and she came through with a game-ending two-RBI single to give Warren the 10-0 win.

Chase and Wood were each 2-for-3 to lead Warren’s offense. Julia Lobdell tossed all four innings, allowing three hits and striking out two batters. Head and Nyquist played well up the middle for Warren’s defense, with Head, the second baseman, registering three putouts in the top of the third.

Lobdell was 4-0 in the district tournament, allowing three earned runs in 18 innings.

Warren – outscoring opponents St. Marys, Bradford and DuBois twice, 40-5 in four total games – advances to the section tournament July 1 through 5 in DuBois. Section 1 is comprised of teams from Erie, Crawford, Warren, Forest, McKean, Elk, Cameron, Clearfield, Jefferson, Clarion, Venango, and Butler counties.
