Girls Majors down DuBois, set to host championship game

Three up, three down for the Warren Girls Majors All-Stars.

Warren advanced to the District 10 North/South Championship game with a 8-3 win over DuBois on Monday. The Majors All-Stars will take on the winner of the loser’s bracket final between DuBois and Punxsutawney Friday at Hawbaker Field.

Things started quickly for Warren in Monday’s game courtesy of an RBI single by Celia Chase that scored Alexis Nyquist, who had singled to lead off the top of the first inning. Chase came around to score on Kiersten Hoffman’s RBI base hit to give Warren a 2-0 lead.

DuBois took advantage of four walks and a two-run double by Mya Geer in the bottom of the inning before starting pitcher Julia Lobdell settled in. After allowing three runs in the first, Lobdell gave up just one hit and one walk the rest of the game, striking out three batters along the way.

Warren tied the game in the second when Lexi Head scored on a sacrifice bunt by Trinity Wennberg and took the lead in the third thanks to a two-run single by Hoffman and an RBI single by Grace Wortman.

Gracie Wood put the finishing touch on Warren’s offensive output with a two-run homer over the head of the DuBois right fielder, making it an 8-3 advantage in the fourth. Wood finished the day 3-for-3 at the plate while Hoffman added two hits and three runs batted in.

Defensively, Alexis Nyquist had a solid day at shortstop with a running catch into center field in the bottom of the fourth. Center fielder Ellie Lobdell was impressive as well with a running grab into the right-center gap in the third.

Friday’s D10 North/South title game is set to begin at 6 p.m. at the Farm Colony Complex’s Hawbaker Field. As the winner’s bracket representative at 3-0, Warren will have to be beaten twice by the winner of DuBois and Punxsutawney.
