Girl Scouts provide more planter boxes
Cadette Girl Scout Troop 30699 is on a mission to help its community of Youngsville live healthy by giving out planter boxes so people can grow healthy foods. Boxes will be available from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 7, at the Youngsville Borough parking lot.
“Front Porch Planters” is a box gardening project developed by Youngsville Girl Scouts in the “Challenge & Change: Challenge Yourself, Change the World” program. Girls identified a need in the community for healthy, home-grown foods.
The program is open to all households in the Russell, Ackley and Pine Grove Township communities. The planter boxes are made from cedar and are designed so participants can grow a vegetable garden right on their front porch year after year. The cedar boxes, soil, plants and watering can will be provided, a value of more than $20.
New participants will be asked to complete a pre and post survey. Returning participants are requested to fill out a post survey. The boxes are limited to one per family.
The program is funded by Girl Scout Troop 30699 and a USDA grant. Donations are accepted to continue to fund this project for the future but are not necessary.
