Golf results

Mike Dolecki and Fuzzy Merenick each shot a 73 to claim the low gross in the Junior Senior Division and Super Senior Division, respectively, in Sunday’s Warren County Senior Open at Blueberry Golf Club. Denny Nosel and Bruce Burton each netted 65 in the Junior Senior Division and Tom Dalton had the Super Senior Division’s low net with 69.

In Monday’s Blueberry Senior League, Dave Progar and Terry Moldovan tied for the low gross with 37 while George Derx had the low net of 27. Here are the team scores from Monday’s competition:

Janeal Hedman recorded her first career hole-in-one on Monday at Conewango Valley Country Club. The ace came on the 146-yard second hole, using a 3-wood. It was witnessed by Lana Creal, Marysue See and Ruth Derby.

College news

Warren Area High School graduate Kelsey Nuhfer was awarded an NCAA postgraduate scholarship for the 2013-2014 winter sports period. Nuhfer and Cal U teammate Clarissa Enslin were two of 58 student-athletes to receive the honor. The NCAA postgraduate scholarship is awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically in their final year of intercollegiate athletic competition. The scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education and now awards 174 scholarships annually (87 men, 87 women).

Kinzua soccer

Kinzua U10 Darling defeated Meadville Area Soccer Club, 6-2, Sunday in Meadville. Alex Ferry had a hat trick with three goals and an assist, Alyssa Anderson had a goal and an assist, Jack Darling and Alyssa Fuchs had one goal each, and Gracia Clark and Lauren Anderson added assists. Will McCullough and Lauren Anderson combined efforts in goal while Lynzie Grubbs chipped in a solid defensive effort. Kinzua will end the season this weekend playing three games in Edinboro.

Old-Timers baseball

The Jamestown Old-Timers Baseball Club traveled to Warren, Ohio, for a doubleheader Saturday and came away with two wins, improving its season record to 2-2.

Ted Morrison tossed a seven-inning one-hitter in a 9-1 win over Salem, Ohio. He struck out five and walked none. The Old-Timers were led at the plate by Ron Thomas, who went 3-for-3 with a double and a triple, while Larry Persing, Dave Matz and Ed Baldensperger were each 2-for-3.

In the second game, Jamestown squeezed out a 3-2 win over host Warren, Ohio. Sammy Spera pitched for the Old-Timers and recorded five strikeouts. Roy Luksch came through with a bases-loaded single in the top of the seventh to drive in the go-ahead run for Jamestown.

The Old-Timers return to action on June 22 with a doubleheader in Struthers, Ohio.

Warren-area players include: Morrison, Thomas, Persing, Baldensperger (Warren), and Brian Moldovan (Sheffield).

Jr. hockey

Beginning in the 2014-2015 season, Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena will host a team in the North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL). The ‘Southern Tier Xpress’ was the name chosen through a contest that began in early March. The team is owned by the Jamestown Area Hockey Associates LLC, and co-owner Brian Cersosimo will serve as General Manager. The Xpress will take the place of the recently defunct Jamestown Jets and Jamestown Ironmen.
