PIAA playoffs

District 10’s last remaining baseball teams, Cathedral Prep and Northwestern, each fell in the PIAA Western Finals on Monday. Prep was defeated by Harriton, 5-2, in the Class AAA Western Final at Governors’ Field in Bellefonte. Nortwestern lost to Martinsburg Central via mercy rule, 14-2, in five innings in the Class AA Western Final at North Allegheny High School. The last District 10 baseball team to play in a state final was Villa Maria, which finished second in Class A in 2006.

District 9 will be represented for the second-straight year after Elk County Catholic defeated Bishop McCort, 1-0, on the strength of a complete game shutout from senior pitcher Brandon Schlimm. The Crusaders will face Devon Prep Friday at Altoona’s Blair County Ballpark for the PIAA Class A Championship.

Old Timers baseball

The Jamestown Old Timers Baseball Club traveled to Warren, Ohio for a doubleheader Saturday and came away with two wins, improving their season record to 2-2.

Ted Morrison tossed a seven inning one-hitter in a 9-1 win over Salem, Ohio while facing just one batter over the minimum. Morrison struck out five and walked none. The Old Timers were led at the plate by Ron Thomas, who went 3-for-3 with a double and a triple while Larry Persing, Dave Matz and Ed Baldensperger were each 2-for-3.

In the second game, Jamestown squeezed out a 3-2 win over host Warren, Ohio. Sammy Spera pitched for the Old Timers and recorded five strikeouts. Roy Luksch came through with a bases-loaded single in the top of the seventh to drive in the go ahead run for Jamestown.

The Old Timers return to action on June 22 with a doubleheader in Struthers, Ohio.

Golf outing

The Eisenhower Mat Club will be holding their second annual Golf Tournament on July 12 at Cable Hollow Golf Course. Cost is $60 per person and includes golf, dinner, hot dogs at the turn, and door prizes. Registration forms can be found at or by calling Cable Hollow Golf Course at 757-4765.

Barnyard Classic

Registration forms for this year’s Barnyard Classic must be postmarked by June 15 in order to be accepted. The tournament is scheduled to be held June 28 at Eisenhower High School. Registration forms can be found at

Jamie California shot a 37 for the low gross on the front nine and Skeet Williams shot a 36 on the back in last week’s Jackson Valley Tuesday Night League. Larry Himes, Kris Anthony, and Randy Mineweaser all netted 31. Here are the league’s team rankings through June 3:
