Fun Day at Russell school filled with smiles, laughter
Students at Russell Elementary School celebrated the approaching end of the school year with a Fun Day on Thursday, with semi-organized activities in the school yard.
The circus carnival-themed event was organized by Sarah Greene and Michelle Wonderling, with school and community volunteers running the shows.
A martial arts demonstration by Integrity Martial Arts and disc jockeys from the Russell Roller Rink added to the fun.
Greene said there were 12 entertainment stations for the classes to rotate through, including two inflated bounce houses, a photo booth, Simon Says dancing to the disc jockey, face painting, crafts and a pie-eating contest where the children couldn’t use their hands and the pie was actually whipped cream.
There was also a snack station with fresh-made cotton candy and punch to keep their energy levels up.
The favorite with the kids, however, was a dunking booth with teachers in the hot, or more aptly, cold seat. The water was heated, but after getting dunked a few times, sitting on the platform in 50-degree temperatures lost its appeal rather quickly.
Greene noted that while this will be the last year for Fun Day at the current location, the tradition will continue next year at the Eisenhower campus.
