AARP’s smart driver courses are offered

The Allegheny Community Center will be hosting three American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Smart Driver courses between June and October. If you are over 55-years old you may be eligible for an automobile insurance premium reduction or discount of five percent for three years (ask your insurance agent – some insurance companies require that all drivers in the household take the course) and there are no tests (written or driving).

On Tuesday, June 24, and Wednesday, June 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. an eight-hour course will be taught by Larry Jackson in two four-hour sessions. This class is for drivers who have not taken the course before or took the course more than three years and three months ago.

On Thursday, August 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. a four-hour refresher course will be taught by Charles Merroth. This class is for drivers who have taken the course less than three years and three months ago.

On Wednesday, Oct. 1, and Thursday, Oct. 2, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. an eight-hour course will be taught by Larry Jackson in two four-hour sessions . This class is also for drivers who have not taken the course before or took the course more than three years and three months ago.

The courses were updated and released this January after significant research funded by a grant from Toyota to AARP. These courses are intended to increase your personal safety by covering the basics of defensive driving. Just as important, the courses are designed to make you aware of how changes in vision, hearing and physical reflexes due to aging can impact your driving. New vehicle and roadway features and new laws of the road will also be discussed.

Each course is $20 per person, ($15 for an AARP member) paid by check to AARP or cash to the instructor on the first day of class. You do not have to be a member of AARP to take the course but your AARP card is required for the discount. Advanced registration is recommended as class is limited to 25 attendees. You must be a licensed Pennsylvania Driver to take the courses. This course will be presented at the Allegheny Community Center (ACC), 42 Clark Street, Warren (over the TAWC bus center across from Bilo).

For course registration, call the ACC at 723-3237. For more information on the course see the AARP Web site: www.aarpdriversafety.org/course-overview.html.
