Greensburg Salem shuts down D10-champ Lady Dragons at states
ERIE -After 19 straight victories, Warren’s bats were finally silenced.
Greensburg Salem pitcher Melissa Wagner threw a complete-game shutout, leading her team to a 2-0 victory over Warren in the opening round of the PIAA Class AAA State Playoff Tournament on Monday at Penn State Behrend.
Warren had outscored opponents 188-19 through 20 games, but Wagner found a way to contain the Lady Dragons’ bats, scattering six hits while striking out 11.
Warren had a chance early; Kennedy Walter reached on a single, and moved to second base when Alexa Bupp drew a walk. Wagner was able to escape the threat, getting a pop out and a ground out.
Warren put itself in a great position to score again in the bottom of the second. Megan Wortman led the inning off by driving a triple to deep center field. Wagner was again able to escape unscathed, registering two strikeouts and a fly out to keep the game scoreless.
The game’s only scoring came in the top of the fourth inning with the Lady Lions at the plate. Karly Mellinger led the inning off with a double, and scored moments later on Kellie Hutchinson’s RBI triple to center field. Hutchinson would then score when Maggie Kallock singled to left-center. Greensburg Salem would total two runs on three hits in the inning, giving the Lions a permanent lead.
Warren threatened again in the bottom of the fourth when Meghan Loutzenhiser doubled with one out. Once again, Wagner wiggled her way out of it. Overall, Warren left five runners on base, three in scoring position.
The Dragons benefitted from some solid defense in the top of the seventh to keep themselves in the game. With no outs and a runner on first, Greensburg Salem’s Lauren McLaughlin attempted to lay down a bunt. When McLaughlin popped the bunt up, Warren catcher Paige Wilson leapt, caught the ball, and fired the to first base to complete the double play.
Alexis Munksgard singled with two outs for Warren in the bottom of the seventh, but Wagner, true to form, finished the game with a groundout and completed the shutout for Greensburg Salem, sending the Lions to the PIAA Quarterfinals.
“Their pitcher threw well. Our timing was off,” said Warren coach Mark Bupp, whose Dragons won their first District 10 Class AAA title last week since 2010, and finish 19-2. “We just weren’t able to put an inning together. We stranded runners early and didn’t convert our chances. It’s a tough day when you do that. We just didn’t do enough with the bats, plain and simple.”
The loss was the final game in the careers of seniors Kaitlin Ishman, Walter, Bupp, and Lauren Frazier. All four started in the game, and Bupp delivered one final fine pitching performance, striking out eight while only allowing two runs.
“I’m proud of all the kids. They all gave great effort all season,” said Bupp. “I’m really proud of the seniors, too. That group accomplished a lot and has a lot to be proud of. The team would also like to say how appreciative we were of the fan following and support we got today. That was really neat to see.”
With the loss, the Lady Dragons finish the season with a record of 19-2, a Region 7 title, and a District 10 championship title, and this group of seniors made it to the D10 championship game every season. Warren has played in six straight D10 title games. Greensburg Salem now advances to play the winner of Thomas Jefferson and Bellefonte in the PIAA quarterfinals.
