Grove City eliminates Dragons in shutout
SLIPPERY ROCK-Warren’s offense has gone through its share of ups and downs this season.
A slow day at the plate led to an early exit from the District 10 Class AAA playoffs on Tuesday, 4-0, at the hands of Grove City at Slippery Rock’s Jack Critchfield Park.
“It just wasn’t in the cards from the get go,” said Warren coach Rick Eaton. “(Grove City’s Jordan Anderson) had a very good at-bat in the first inning, then they came through with a clutch hit. I thought Grove City had good, fundamental at-bats all day.”
Anderson fought off a number of pitches with two strikes, eventually working a full count before smacking a double in the Eagles’ second at-bat of the game. Teammate Jesse Hodge came through with a single two batters later to put Grove City on top, 1-0.
That was all the run support Eagles’ starting pitcher Matt Gordon would need. The senior righthander tossed a complete game shutout while striking out four batters and walking one.
“We knew he’d pitch well,” said Eaton. “He’ll be a tough match-up for anyone; he’s the horse that can carry that team.”
Warren notched five hits to Grove City’s four, but the Dragons never threatened to put together a big inning.
Grove City tacked on three more in the fifth thanks to a 2 RBI single from Jared Sample – which chased Warren starter Tanner Stanz from the game – and a bases-loaded walk.
Stanz took the loss after allowing all four runs despite giving up just three hits. Collin Fantaskey finished out the fifth inning and Tanner Teconchuk tossed a scoreless sixth and seventh.
Offensively, designated hitter Derek Reagle was 2-for-3 while Fantaskey, Jason Stanton, and Ryan Gustafson all added one hit.
The loss ends the Dragons’ season with a record of 15-5 overall.
Grove City will move on to play Corry in the District 10 Class AAA semifinal on Friday at a site and time to be determined. The Beavers were 10-2 winners over Conneaut in their quarterfinal game.
On the other side of the bracket, Harbor Creek topped defending D10 Champion Slippery Rock, 6-1, and Cathedral Prep defeated General McLane, 7-0.
