Warren rides 16-game streak into playoffs

ERIE – Warren’s girls softball team actually earned three wins this weekend – two on the field, and the Lady Dragons return to the District 10 Class AAA playoffs on Thursday.

In addition to a forfeit win over Villa Maria, Warren defeated both Iroquois, 6-1, and Saegertown, 4-1, on Saturday in Erie.

The day started out well enough as the co-region champs got three homers from leadoff hitter Kaitlin Ishman, and another from Paige Wilson, in the win at Iroquois. Alexa Bupp struck out 15 over six innings, walking none and giving up one hit, for the win.

Meghan Loutzenhiser earned the win with six innings, and she was 2-for-3 with two RBI, over Saegertown.

“I thought it was a really good day for our kids,” said Warren coach Mark Bupp, whose Lady Dragons finish the regular season at 17-1 overall. “We played two playoff-bound teams and I thought we played well against both teams. First game, Ish (Ishman) had a phenomenal day at the plate and Willie (Wilson) continued to do her thing as well.

“Saegertown is a solid team and I thought our kids played well,” he said. “Meg (Loutzenhiser) started that game and did well and Lex came on in the seventh and struck out the side. Overall, I was pleased with our kids’ efforts. Second game, Ish also had a strong game defensively at shortstop.”

Bupp said the Dragons are right where they wanted to be.

“They have very, very high expectations of themselves, probably higher than we do at this point,” he said.

The Dragons play Corry in the District 10 Class AAA playoff semifinals at 1 p.m. Thursday at Penn State Behrend.
