Isenberg, Higby lead Sheffield D9 track qualifiers

All underclassmen.

Sheffield junior Jen Isenberg is a returning state qualifier – seventh in the state in javelin – and another junior, Adam Higby, is seeded as high as second, as the District 9 Class AA Track and Field Championships are on Friday at Brookville High School.

Isenberg is seeded fifth this year in a just-under-state-qualifying throw of 118 feet, nine inches (121 feet is automatic state qualifying). Last year, Isenberg was fourth in D9, but qualified for states by distance and ended up seventh in the state in javelin.

The top two in each event in the D9 Class AA meet advance, plus those who qualify by standard.

“She has been throwing consistently all season despite two weeks out at the beginning due to an injury,” said Sheffield girls coach Jenelle Johnson. “The last month she has greatly stepped up the lifting, and we have been working hard on her technique. Her hard work last season paid off… And I expect it to pay off again this year.”

Other Lady Wolverines who qualified include: two-time qualifier Morgan Leichtenberger, another junior, who is seeded 12th in the 100 hurdles and 12th in the long jump. Sophomore Brittany Fritz is seeded 15th in the shot put.

Junior Jay Marlow is seeded 16th in the 100-meter dash and eighth in the 200 for Sheffield’s boys team.

Higby is seeded second in the high jump at 6-1, which is only three inches off the automatic state-qualifying standard. He also qualified for districts in the long jump – eighth – and triple jump – seventh. Junior teammate Jake Johnson is seeded 12th for Sheffield in the high jump.
