Warren’s Shattuck wins D10 title in 110 hurdles before meet suspended

HARBORCREEK-Inclement weather forced a pair of delays and eventually suspended Wednesday’s District 10 Class AAA Track Meet, but it couldn’t keep one Dragon from punching his ticket to states.

Ryan Shattuck leaned across the finish line to edge Slippery Rock’s Fred Urbaniak by three-hundredths of a second in the boys’ 110 hurdle finals. His time of 15.68 was nearly a tenth of a second better than his seed time. Urbaniak was seeded first in the event, entering with a time of 15.58.

“It was a PR for him, and he needed it to be a PR to get the win,” said Warren boys’ coach Steve Norris. “We worked hard on his technique at practice this week. He put together a clean run; that can make a tenth of a second difference. He’s been such a hard worker, so it’s a good result for him.”

As the District 10 Champion, Shattuck will move on to the PIAA State Championship Meet May 23 and 24 at Shippensburg University. He’ll have a shot at two more D-10 titles in the 300 hurdles and 4-by-400 relay when the meet is resumed on Saturday. Shattuck is seeded second in the 300 hurdles behind teammate Luke Wortman, and the 4-by-400 team is also second behind Slippery Rock.

Shattuck wasn’t the only Dragon to earn a place on the podium before the meet was called off. Kyle Kulka finished third in the long jump and teammate Ryan Gorgacz was seventh. Kulka’s jump of 20-9 was only a foot and an inch lower than the state-qualifying mark.

The boys’ 4-by-800 relay team of Seth Johnson, Brandon Nielson, Blake Ristau, and Dan Jenkins finished in eighth place.

On the girls’ side, Lindsay Onuffer and Rachel Lasecki placed sixth and eighth in the 100 hurdles, respectively.

Tori Paris finished fourth in the high jump, Casey Kulka was sixth in the 100-meter dash, Valerie Latimer was seventh in the 400, Nikki Atkins was fourth in the shot put, and D.J. Hahn took fifth in the javelin.

The Warren girls are currently eighth and the boys are 11th with eight events remaining for both. Hickory leads the girls team race with 85.5 points and Grove City is the boys leader with 57.

The meet will resume at the conclusion of the Class AA meet Saturday at Harbor Creek High School.
