Knights outduel Eagles for 2nd time, earn playoff bid

Eisenhower received a gift from the top of their lineup in the final inning of Monday’s Region 4 game against Youngsville.

The Knights pushed five runs across in the seventh to enlarge the lead and give sophomore pitcher Casey Vincent a little confidence on the mound. The final offensive inning for Youngsville was over in four batters, ending a seven-inning grind for Vincent in which he gave up his first earned run of the season.

“Honestly, it was a struggle today,” said Eisenhower coach Cody Vincent. “We hit well in the first and then went could until that last inning. Bryce Garris and Jake Harvey both came through with RBI’s that gave us room to breathe. Defensively, we made some errors, but Casey was able to get out of a couple of jams, and we made plays when we had to have them. It wasn’t the prettiest.”

For Youngsville, it was a dissapointment, but it had it’s bright moments according to head coach Wayne Marino.

“I don’t want to take anything away from Casey, because he beat us today, but we were hitting the ball,” said Marino. “He wasn’t able to dominate like he usually does. We were aggressive, but those few errors at the end really opened up their lead. I wish it had been closer in the seventh. We stayed with them, right until that end, then it was like we fell off the bus completely. Of course, they made it tough for us too.”

The win assures Eisenhower of the region’s automatic playoff bid as the top Class A team ahead of Youngsville and Iroquois. It will be the second-consecutive appearance for the Knights in the District 10 Tournament.

The Eagles will play again on Wednesday at home against Seneca, while the Knights will host Northeast on the same day.
