Dragons secure region title with win at LeBoeuf
WATERFORD-The Warren Dragons clinched their second-consecutive Region 7 title with a 4-0 win over Fort LeBoeuf on Monday afternoon.
Warren is now 14-3 overall and finishes with a 9-1 mark in region-play. The Dragons wrapped up a share of the league title and Region 7’s top playoff seed last week with a win over second-place Harbor Creek.
Monday’s win was the Dragons’ 12th in a row heading into the home stretch of the regular season.
“We’re playing pretty good defense right now,” said Warren coach Rick Eaton. “There was a couple games where we fell off a little bit, but the kids stepped up and made some real nice plays. (Fort LeBoeuf) had some great plays, too. They ran down a couple that would have given us more runs.”
As it was, the extra runs wouldn’t mean much.
Starting pitcher Collin Fantaskey scattered four hits over seven innings, striking out six batters and walking none. Also the team’s leadoff hitter, Fantaskey tripled to start the game and came around to score on Austin Schwanke’s double in the very next at-bat.
The Dragons plated three more for insurance in the top of the seventh when Schwanke notched a sacrifice fly to score Todd Fasenmyer, who doubled to lead off the inning. Matt Hultquist’s base hit was misplayed in center field allowing Fantaskey to score again, and Derek Reagle added another on a sac fly that scored Tanner Stanz.
With no more region games left to play, the Dragons will look for win number 15 on Tuesday, hosting Jamestown (N.Y.) for senior day at Old Legion Field. This year’s seniors will be recognized prior to the varsity only contest, which is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
Seth Baldensperger had two hits and three RBI in Warren’s 11-6 junior varsity win over the Bison.
