Rain suspends close Youngsville vs. Sheffield game; Warren leads

Heavy rain suspended Friday’s non-region softball game between Youngsville and Sheffield in the bottom of the fifth inning with the Lady Eagles leading, 2-1.

Whether or not the game will be completed comes down to a decision from the schools’ athletic directors. Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association rules state that a game can be considered official after five innings. Since Youngsville was the home team and led after 4 1/2 innings, the bottom of the fifth would not need to be played.

Prior to the storm, Jade Moore singled home Rachel Maines to give Sheffield a one-run lead in the top of the third. The Lady Wolverines loaded the bases with one out, but a flyout to Lady Eagles’ center fielder Jessica Jameson and a ground ball to third baseman Elyssa Horn cut the rally short.

Youngsville answered quickly, taking advantage of a pair of Sheffield miscues to score two in the bottom of the inning. Karissa Cratty led off with a single and came around to score when a Kelsey Anderson bunt was thrown into right field. With Anderson making her way to third, Jameson sent a hard hit grounder to the left side that brought the run home via fielder’s choice to give the Lady Eagles a lead.

The two teams played another inning and a half in a light rain before the game was called with no outs in the bottom of the fifth.

Katie Gustafson is in line to be the winning pitcher after tossing three innings and allowing one run for Youngsville.

Horn moved from third to the circle to shut out Sheffield in the fourth and fifth.

Freshman Claire Pierson allowed two runs – both unearned – in four innings for the Lady Wolverines.

WARREN 9, VILLA MARIA 0 (susp. in 4th)

Warren’s non-region game against Villa Maria at Hawbaker Field was called off with the Lady Dragons on top, 9-0, in the fourth inning. The game, which was five outs short of becoming official – is currently suspended with no makeup date set.
