Warren Players will present ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ May 15-18
Jesus Christ Superstar, presented by the Warren Players, explodes onto the historic Struthers Library Theatre stage May 15-17 at 8 p.m. and May 18 at 2 p.m.
Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar pthe biblical story of the last seven days of Jesus of Nazareth’s life (as portrayed by Logan Beard), largely from the perspective of Judas (Rob Buckler). This two-time Tony Award winning production for Best Musical Review was originally created as a rock album and was not envisioned as a theatrical production. The first authorized American concert took place on July 11, 1971, at Pittsburgh’s Civic Arena. Jesus Christ Superstar ubsequently debuted as a musical theater production on Broadway at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in October, 1971. According to director, Deborah Murphy; “We are keeping with Mr. Webber’s original vision, striving to create more of a rock arena feel and less that of a full-blown theatrical production.”
Rounding out the cast is Dawn Sears (Mary Magdalene), Jim Stowe (Pilate), Randy Johnson (Peter), Ron Keeney (Simon), Michael Sternberg (King Herod), John Beard (Annas), Allan Branthoover (Caiaphas), with Gary Brumagin, Jordan Burrows, Bethany Chapman, Brionna Childs, Elissa Davis, Alex Dolinger, Adrianna Gee, Jean Gomory, Tyler Haslett, Lil Hunkele, Lauren Insinger, Andy Lalwani, Megan Moore, Sarah Myers, Whitney Poindexter, Lilya Renner, Georgi Rice, Connor Rosborough, R.Scott Schriner, Robin Thomas, and Riley Zaffino.
The orchestra, under the direction of Fran Leto includes David Powell (Piano), Will Russell (Electric Guitar), Tom Dunn (Drums), Gregg Bimber (Electric Bass), Ellen Scalise (String Bass), Gale Lindell (Trumpet), Khlare Bracken (Cello), Kendall Carrier (Violin), Cathy Peterson (Clarinet), Pat Murphy (Flute), Betty Fitzgerald (Flute/Piccolo) and Fran Leto (Keyboard).
The production team includes Lil Hunkele (Production Manager), Dawn Sears (Choreographer), R. Scott Schriner (Stage Manager), Charmaine Check (Costume Mistress), Gary Brumagin (Set Construction), Barbara Crowley (Lighting Design), Elyse Brown (Sound Technician), and Jeremy Jeziorski (Photography and YouTube Promotion).
Jesus Christ Superstar’s timeless appeal, powerful music, and the cast’s breathtaking, raw emotional portrayals make it a production not to be missed.
Tickets are $14 for adults and $12 student/seniors and may be purchased in advance by calling the theater office at 723-7231. Assisted listening devices and handicapped seating may also be reserved. This production is rated PG for realistic depictions of the events occurring in the last days of Jesus’ life.
