Winter is gone and soon the summer sun will heat things up.
The municipal swimming pools in Youngsville and Warren will open up for summer fun next month.
The pool directors have taken the Warren County School District schedule into account. The last day for students is Tuesday, June 10, but commencement is not until Friday, June 13. Both pools will begin their full summer schedules on Wednesday, June 11.
The Warren pool will open for limited hours a few days ahead. On Saturday and Sunday, June 7-8, the pool will be open from noon to 5 p.m. And, on Monday and Tuesday, June 9-10, it will be open from 4 to 6:30 p.m.
Daily hours from June 11 through the end of the season are noon to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and noon to 5 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
The pool is also open for private parties and special events daily from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Staff at the Warren YMCA, which will manage the pool for the city this year, is working on scheduling special events for the year.
A monthly special events calendar will be posted at the pool and on the city’s website.
Applications and prices can be found at www.cityofwarren.gov/pool, at the Municipal Building or at the YMCA, 212 Lexington Ave. There is an early-bird discount rate for those who buy passes before June 1.
At the Brokenstraw Valley Swimming Pool in Youngsville, daily hours starting June 11 are from 1 to 5 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The pool closes for the year on Saturday, Aug. 16.
“For six weeks out of the season we do swimming lessons,” Pool Director Lee Bryan said. Those are held in 45-minute groups with classes starting at 9:15, 10:15, and 11:15 a.m.
“Every night we have water aerobics and master swim,” he said. Those classes run from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. The pool also offers individualized swim lessons.
There will be lifeguard programs on June 20, 22, 27, and 29, and a CPR and first aid course on June 31.
There are several special events on the BVSP schedule. The annual World’s Largest Swim Lesson will be held June 16. There will be a luau on June 26, movie nights on July 3 and 31, Christmas in July on the 17th, and Natural Wellness Day – featuring chiropractic services, yoga, natural foods, herbal remedies, and martial arts – on July 19.
The Bottle Boat Race, a new event, will take place on July 12. “Kids will make their own boat out of plastic bottles,” Bryan said. “Anything that will hold them up.”
The pool will celebrate local businesses on “Thank You Tuesdays.”
The annual Doggie Dip will wrap up the BVSP schedule on Aug. 23. “The Doggie Dip has gotten bigger and bigger every year,” Bryan said.
