Richard L. “Dick” or “Snuffy” Hiles, 90, formally of Sugar Grove, Pa., and Clermont, Fla., passed away Thursday May 1, 2014 at the Rouse Warren Co. Home.
He was born March 6, 1924 in Bruin, Pa. a son of the late Robert McKinley and Zelma (Young) Hiles. Dick served in the US Army during WWII in the Pacific Theater with the 201st Port Co. He received his BA in English from Slippery Rock University, and then went on to receive his Masters in English from University of Pittsburgh. Dick started teaching at Bruin Elementary School and then went on to become principal at the Lottsville, Sugar Grove, Lander and Russell Elementary Schools, retiring in 1987. Dick was a member of the Sugar Grove American Legion, Sugar Grove Volunteer Fire Department and the Masonic Lodge #190 in Groveland, Fl. He enjoyed golfing, bowling and traveling extensively throughout the United States.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Marion Kendall Hiles, whom he married August 17, 1963 in Marienville, Pa., 2 sons; Richard M. Hiles and the late Kim Hiles, and Robert A. (Amy) Hiles, both of Erie, a sister Lucille McAnallen of Butler, Pa. and 3 grandchildren, Brittany, Trevor and Abby Hiles.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Robert M. Hiles Jr. and Gerald Hiles.
Friends will be received on Sunday from 37 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 314 North Main St. Youngsville, Pa. 16371. A funeral service will be held on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the Lander United Methodist Church in Lander, Pa., with the Rev. Mark Hurst, pastor officiating. Burial will be in Warren Co. Memorial Park in Warren, Pa.
