Ike’s Vincent throws no-no in region win at Youngsville

With no scoreboard at Youngsville’s Davis Street Field, Eisenhower pitcher Casey Vincent’s accomplishment nearly went unnoticed by the crowd gathered to watch Ike’s 6-0 region win over the host Eagles.

The sophomore righty tossed his second career no-hitter, striking out 13 Youngsville batters while facing just two over the minimum. He walked two and one runner reached on an error, but was picked off at first base shortly after.

“It’s exciting to coach your brother’s no-hitter and he’s excited when he does it, but the bigger thing is we won the game,” said Cody Vincent, Casey’s older brother and Eisenhower’s head coach. “It sets us up good (for the rest of the season). We’re up on Youngsville now with them and Iroquois left to go for the playoff spot.”

Eisenhower and Youngsville are each 2-2 in Region 4 with Ike now holding the head-to-head tiebreaker. Both teams have a win over Iroquois, the region’s only other Class A team.

“We need to get better. We’ve still got a good chance, but we have to beat them the second time,” said Eagles’ coach Wayne Marino. “I can’t take anything away from Casey. Even if we played error-free we wouldn’t have beat him today.”

Vincent is now 2-0 with 30 strikeouts in two starts this season. Including a pair of relief appearances, he has thrown 16 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run.

The Knights’ offense started early in Wednesday’s win with three runs in the top of the first inning. Tab Berkhous’ bases loaded groundball was misplayed allowing Logan Bellardo to score, and Shane Arford singled home Vincent and Kyle Hunt to make it a 3-0 Ike advantage.

Arford tagged a solo home run over the left field wall to lead off the top of the third, and Hunt and Berkhous notched back-to-back RBI singles in the fourth.

Arford, Vincent, and Bellardo each had two hits to lead the Knights at the plate.

Youngsville (2-3 overall, 2-2 in Region 4) travels to Northwestern for a non-region game on Thursday and Eisenhower (2-4, 2-2) welcomes Titusville to Werner Park on Friday.
