New Century Saxophone quartet closes season

The Warren Concert Association will host the New Century Saxophone Quartet on Saturday, April 26. The concert is the final event of the association’s four-concert series for 2013-2014. The ensemble will perform at downtown Warren’s historic Struthers Library Theatre beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The quartet, which debuted in 1993, features a soprano, an alto, a tenor, and a baritone saxophone. Each instrument has a unique sound and, when played by the classically trained musicians of the quartet, they “spread the gospel about this maligned instrument’s inspirations.”

Based in North Carolina, the quartet includes Michael Stephenson, Xin Gao, Drew Hayes, and Stephen Pollock. They are award-winning musicians individually and collectively and, in addition to being performers, they are also music instructors. The group has performed at the White House, with the United States Navy Band, with symphonies across the U.S., on television in the United States, Europe, and Central America, at numerous classics festivals, and at engagements including Chicago’s Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, Spivey Concert Hall in Atlanta, Boston’s Symphony Hall? the Merkin Concert Hall in NYC, Strathmore Hall in Washington, D.C., and more.

The first ensemble of its kid ever to win First Prize of the Concert Artists Guild Competition, New Century Saxophone Quartet is a pioneering and versatile group with a diverse repertory, ranging from Bach to innovative contemporary works. The group has recorded extensively with Channel Classics Records.

Tickets are available in advance at VirgAnn Flowers and Gifts and at the Struthers Library Theatre business office. Adult tickets are $20 each and student tickets are $5. Tickets will also be available at the theatre box office from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the evening of the concert. For further information, call 723-6505 or email
