Mercyhurst Prep shuts out Eisenhower

The sentiment from the Eisenhower bench after Saturday’s home loss to Mercyhurst Prep was clear. “We should have won,” was said numerous times by players and coaches.

Eisenhower had more hits and more runners in scoring position in a 2-0 non-region loss to the visiting Lakers, but couldn’t hit that crucial pitch when it mattered most.

“We played well today,” said Eisenhower coach Cody Vincent. “What it came down to, really, was having our seconds and thirds on, but not hitting them home. (Mercyhurst) had great pitches when they needed them, and we couldn’t convert.”

The Knights had five hits in seven innings, three of them infield shots that were quickly dealt with by Mercyhurst’s defense. The Lakers needed only two hits to score two runs, and took advantage of a couple of errors and mishaps.

Mercyhurst Prep hasn’t lost all season, and was carrying the momentum from three solid wins last week.

“(Kyle) Hunt pitched great,” said Vincent. “Zero earned runs was impressive. (Shane) Arford had a double and that great catch out in left. (Jake) Harvey made a play in the seventh that really saved us at that moment.”

Eisenhower travels to state-champion Johnsonburg Monday, then at Region 3 and county-rival Youngsville Wednesday.
