Ike boys sweep; girls win once, break record

JOHNSONBURG – The Eisenhower boys ran to a sweep of Johnsonburg and Cameron County on Thursday, winning by scores of 94-55 and 86-64, respectively.

Senior Tim Lange took first in three individual events – the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles, and pole vault – and ran a leg of the winning 4-by-400 relay. Fellow senior Devin VanGuilder was also part of a winning relay in addition to his first-place performances in the mile and two mile.

Other individual first-place finishes went to Randy Buchanan in the 400 and Noah VanHouten in the triple jump.

“It seemed like it was a good day for everyone. We’re seeing some times come down,” said Eisenhower coach David Bauer. “The kids in the field events are starting to come around. It’s taking some time but the progress is really encouraging, and we were able to pick up two wins.”

Eisenhower’s girls track team is also winning, and breaking records, this season.

On Thursday, the Lady Knights split – beating Cameron County, 125-25, and falling to a deep District 9 squad in Johnsonburg, 53 1/2-95 1/2.

The school record came in the pole vault, in which Eisenhower has competed for the past two years after a long hiatus without the event at the school. Junior Apprille Seamens’ district-qualifying vault of 8 feet, 6 inches on Thursday beat the former school record of 7-8, set by Ashley Sopkin in 2003.

“Both (Seamens and junior Sidney Wallin) are capable of getting it,” said Eisenhower girls coach Mike Logue. “(The vaulters have) been working with volunteer coach Adam VanOrd and he said they had a very positive practice (Wednesday). Apprille was almost a whole foot better (than the record).”

In the split, Julia Bauer was first overall in the 1,600 meters, Grace Thompson won the 3,200, freshman Madi Hultman won the shot put and was third in the javelin and long jump, and Tiffany Work won the high jump. Seamens, Wallin and Emily Warner swept the pole vault.

“I’m very happy,” said Logue. “Our objective coming into Johnsonburg, knowing how much depth they had, was to hold them under 100 (points) with personal-bests… In the Cameron County meet, there were areas they lacked depth where we had to taken advantage of, which we did that.

“Our throws are dominated by our young throwers and I thought they had a very good day today,” said Logue. “Hultman stepping up and winning the shot overall. (Freshman Alecia) Straight had a personal-best in the discus. Emily McJunkin ran a very nice race in the 400. Tiffany Work: we don’t normally do this, but she ran the 100 hurdles and we let her turn around and run the 100; she just missed districts in both.”
