Eagles move to 2-0; Warren falls
LAWRENCE PARK-Youngsville coach Wayne Marino said his team had trouble with Iroquois pitcher Mike Yokoff’s curveball early in Thursday’s Region 4 game.
It wasn’t until the sixth inning that the Eagles’ bats settled in to the tune of 16 runs at the expense of three Braves relievers en route to a 17-3 final.
“I knew we could hit. We hit well (in the gym), but I never thought we’d have a 16-run inning,” said Marino. “We were stumped on his curveball but the guys adjusted well to it. We got more patient and drew a couple walks, then Tanner Humphrey and Bryce Sherrard reached on errors, and it just snowballed from there.”
Youngsville scored five runs before the Braves recorded an out in the inning and 11 more with two down. The Eagles pounded out 14 hits including four from Aaron Hoover and two from Thomas Henry, Tyler Lehman, and James Frazier.
While the bats were doing their part, Hoover was shutting down the opposition on the mound. The junior righty went all six innings, striking out eight batters and walking none.
The Eagles (2-0) travel to Franklin on Friday for their third Region 4 game in as many days.

General McLane 4, Warren 3
Playing the second of a tough five-game stretch, the Dragons suffered a 4-3 loss at the hands of Region 7 opponent General McLane at Old Legion Field in North Warren.
Warren’s Matt Hultquist came through with an RBI single to score Ryan Gustafson and break a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth, but McLane answered with a pair of runs in the seventh to drop the Dragons to 1-1 in region play.
“(General McLane) is a good team and they played well,” said Warren coach Rick Eaton. “They just made a couple more plays than we did; that was the difference.”
The Dragons took an early lead when senior catcher Todd Fasenmyer brought home Gustafson on a fielder’s choice in the top of the second inning. Fasenmyer came around to score when left fielder John White legged out an infield single to give Warren a 2-0 advantage.
McLane answered quick with a two-spot in the top of the third, and the score remained tied until Hultquist’s hit in the sixth.
Kevin Correll tied the game and Evan Dillen knocked in what would be the go ahead run for the Lancers, as Warren threatened in the final frame but couldn’t take advantage of Austin Schwanke’s one-out double.
“Our hitting is getting better, but we still need to be more disciplined at the plate,” said Eaton. “These guys need to realize they’re playing on a big field. We had too many fly balls in key situations today.”
Collin Fantaskey worked all seven innings on the mound for the Dragons, allowing two earned runs on eight hits. Schwanke and Tanner Stanz were each 2-for-4 at the plate with Fantaskey, Hultquist, and White contributing one hit each.
Warren (2-2 overall, 1-1 in Region 7) is back in action with three-straight home games at Old Legion Field. The Dragons host Girard on Friday, Cathedral Prep on Saturday, and Harbor Creek on Monday.
Derek Reagle, Collin DeLattre and Seth Baldensperger had two hits each in Warren’s 6-3 junior varsity win.
