Youngsville wins opener

TITUSVILLE-If good things come to those who wait, Youngsville has plenty to look forward to.

The Eagles’ baseball season started on a positive note with a 7-2 Region 4 win over Titusville on Wednesday coming of a string of several postponements and very little outdoor practice time.

The host Rockets took a two-run lead in the bottom of the third inning before the Youngsville bats broke out with three runs in the fifth, two in the sixth, and two more in the seventh.

“It was a really good win, especially over a team that 10-runned us last year,” said Youngsville coach Wayne Marino. “We started slow at first, but came back and hit the ball a little harder late in the game.”

Junior right fielder Bryce Sherrard led the Eagles at the plate going 3-for-3 with two runs batted in.

“(Bryce) was hitting the ball hard all night,” said Marino. “He actually would have been 4-for-4, but the Titusville outfielder misplayed one that was hit into the sun (that counted as an error). It was the same with the other guys. If you put it in play and the other team makes an error, that’s as good as a hit. “

James Frazier picked up the win on the mound after relieving starter Aaron Hoover. The senior allowed just one earned run over five innings while striking out three and walking one.

Frazier also had a productive day at the plate with two hits and an RBI for the Eagles (1-0), who travel to Iroquois on Thursday for another Region 4 match-up.

Eisenhower opened its season at home on Wednesday with a 3-0 Region 3 loss to Franklin. The Knights played well on the defensive side of the ball, but were unable to hit Franklin’s pitching from Joe Desko. They had one hit, and only four base runners the whole game.

Franklin had some trouble at the plate as well, going scoreless for five innings. The visiting Knights reached home twice in the third to secure a lead, and once more in the fourth. In the fifth, after Eisenhower sophomore Casey Vincent turned a 1-6-3 double play, sending his team back to the dugout to bat, it seemed like the Knights finally had some momentum. The sixth inning went scoreless for both teams.

In the bottom of the seventh, Eisenhower loaded the bases with two outs. The winning run came up to bat, but struck out swinging.

Eisenhower’s coach Cody Vincent, in his first year with the team, is looking forward to the rest of the year.

“I want us to contend for a playoff spot this year, and reach the D10 championship,” said Vincent. “We have the arms to do it, I think we showed that today, but we need to get our bats ready. It’s hard to win with only one hit, and four base runners… It was our first time out this year, and we played them tight. Our pitching was great.

“They’re working hard, and it’s my job to prepare them for the situations they’re going to be in this year,” said Vincent. He says the team is looking forward to their Region 3 match-up with country rival Youngsville on April 23, but that they need to focus on getting better each day.

The Knights will play again Friday at Iroquois at 4 pm.
