Dragons even record with rout of St. Marys

ST. MARYS-Playing for the second time in as many days, Warren picked up its first win of the season in convincing fashion, 15-2 in five innings over St. Marys on Tuesday.

The Dragons came out swinging in the top of the first inning with a leadoff double by Collin Fantaskey and an RBI double from Austin Schwanke one batter later. Schwanke came around to score on a Jason Stanton single to give Warren an early two-run lead.

In a four-run top of the third, Ryan Gustafson doubled home a pair of Warren runs before John White and Fantaskey came through with RBI singles.

The Dragons scored six more in the fourth, including a two-RBI double by Stanton, and three in the top of the fifth to put the mercy rule in effect.

Fantaskey started the game on the mound and worked three innings to take the win for Warren. Jake Retterer came in to close out the fourth and fifth.

Fantaskey added three hits at the plate on a three-for-four day, Stanton went three-for-three with three runs batted in, Gustafson was two-for-three with a pair of RBI, and White was two-for-two.

Defensively, the Dragons played error-free baseball after committing four errors in Monday’s loss to DuBois.

“The key today was that we got hits with runners on, which we didn’t do yesterday,” said Warren coach Rick Eaton. “It was our second time out and you could see they had more confidence. It’s good to get two tough (non-region) games in before our region schedule starts on Friday.”

Warren is now 1-1 on the year heading into Friday’s Region 6-opener against General McLane at Old Legion Field.

Warren’s junior varsity team is 2-0 on the year after beating DuBois on Monday and St. Marys on Tuesday. Jimmy Vile earned the decision on the mound and White picked up a save in a 4-2 win on Monday. On Tuesday, Derek Reagle had a grand slam and drove in seven of Warren’s 11 runs en route to an 11-3 win. Collin DeLattre was the winning pitcher, and added three hits at the plate.
