Logging safety meeting planned

The 46th Annual Kane Area Logging Safety Meeting is set for Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at the Johnsonburg Firehall.

After the change in format last year, this year’s event will include Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) continuing education credits for those that wish to take advantage of it. The SFI class “The Right Way to do a Right-Of-Way” will begin at 2 p.m. and last until 4 p.m. The class will focus on knowing you’re doing right on the back roads and right-of-way issues. The class will be presented by a representative of Catamount. Doors will open on the Safety Meeting with registration and inside and outside vendor exhibits at 5 p.m., followed by a light supper.

Vendors participating are AFLAC, Zook Motors, Dave’s Saw Shop/Northeast Stihl, Foster Wineland, Inc., SFI of PA Ag Choice Farm Credit, W.J. Cox Associates, Blue Collar Workwear and Cumberland Truck Equipment.

At 6:30 p.m. the main safety meeting will proceed as in past years. The evening program will be “You Know Where Your Job is, Does Anyone Else.” A group of local presenters will address accidents and getting help to the right spot quickly. There will also be local updates on local state and federal issues. The program will end with the presentation of the AHUG Logger of the Year award.

Those wishing to get SFI credits must attend the entire meeting. Registration for the class at the SFI office at 888-734-9366 or email pasfi@sfiofpa.org.

By combining a SFI continuing education course with the meeting we will be able to provide a needed opportunity for area loggers to get credits and by incorporating it into the program, making it as convenient and productive as possible and at a much lower cost to participants.

The Logger Safety Committee extends an invitation to all sawmills and loggers to attend and take advantage of this opportunity.

In conjunction with the Loggers Safety Meeting, the 16th Annual Women in Timber luncheon will be held at the Kane Country Club on Thursday, April 3, at noon. AHUG and the Kane Area Logging Safety Committee will be organizing the luncheon, open to all women connected with the forest community. Sawmill owners, workers, loggers wives, foresters, others in the industry, forest service, government women and other interested women are invited to attend.

This year’s meeting program topic will be “Women Dealing with Stress”. Anyone who would like to attend or who would like more information should call the AHUG office at 814-837-8550.
