Warren beats Olean at home
Warren opened its home campaign with a solid 5-0 sweep over the defending New York Southern Tier champion Olean Huskies Thursday afternoon at Betts Park.
The Dragons are now 2-0 on the year after defeating the Huskies in Olean last week.
In the top singles match, junior Nate Sandberg defeated Olean’s Jake Volz, 6-0, 6-1.
Ben Auzou, a senior exchange student from France, defeated Zhi Wang in a tough two hour battle by 6-3, 6-2 scores.
“Both boys played exceptionally well today,” reported Warren coach Jeff Bartsch.
In third singles, junior Sean McGuinness battled back from a 2-4 deficit in the first set and then took control of his match to grind out a hard fought 6-4 win over Olean’s Brayden Hawkins. The second set was all McGuinness as he won 85 percent of the long points and scored a 6-1 margin to complete Warren’s singles sweep.
“This was a great match for Sean from beginning to end,” said Warren assistant coach Tim Sandberg. “He will build off of this win and he will become a better player.”
The top doubles pair of Bryce Bauer and Noah Colvin dropped the opening set 4-6 to Luke Earl and Geoffrey Broadbent before storming back in the second and prevailed, 6-4. Tied at one-set-all and highly motivated, the Dragons got an early break and rode out a huge 6-4 win to nail down the fourth win of the day.
“Until match conclusion at the two-and-a-half hour mark, this was an exciting match to watch. A big win for both boys,” said Bartsch. “I was especially pleased that the boys responded well to the coaching of coaches Sandberg and (John) Parroccini.”
The second doubles pair of Steffen Blair and sophomore newcomer Clark Eason narrowly dropped the opening set to Logan Cross and Amon Spenser in a tiebreaker by a 6-7 (5-7). The second set was won by the Dragons with a workmanlike 6-3 win. With darkness beginning to set in, a super tiebreaker was agreed on to decide the match. Blair and Eason won the first five of six points in the race to ten, and with the opponents serving at 9-8 Warren, an Olean drive returned into the net to give Warren the win and complete the team sweep.
In exhibition play, the pairs of Neil Morrison and Eric Cecco, Dylan Hansen and Nick Pellegrino, and Bob McAvoy and Simon Smith earned doubles wins for the Dragons.
Warren returns to action on Wednesday at Elk County Catholic. The next home match is scheduled for Thurswday against Oil City at the Betts Courts.
