World Day of Prayer

Thank you to all those from the community who came out for the 2014 World Day of Prayer Service on Friday, March 7th at the Hessel Valley Lutheran Church. Thank you to the churches who took part in the event – Chandlers Valley United Methodist Church , the Mission Covenant Church, the Hessel Valley Lutheran Church, The First Presbyterian Church of Sugar Grove, the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church, and the Sugar Grove Free Methodist Church. The special speakers were representatives from the Outpost Store on Main Street. Since opening seven years ago the OutPost has given away over $100,000 to local families and community needs. Representatives from the Sugar Grove Food Pantry also spoke on both the local food pantry needs and the Second Harvest Mobile Food Pantry which distributes over 20,000 pounds of food to families every 6 weeks.

First Day of Fishing Breakfast

Its the First Day of Fishing Saturday April 12, 2014 and the Lottsville United Methodist Church is hosting a Pancake Breakfast from 7 a.m. – 11 a.m. The cost is a donation. Breakfast will be Pancakes with Sausage, Scrambled Egg, Juices, Applesauce, Fresh Fruit Pies, Beverages. All fishermen are welcome to join us for breakfast.

Creative Card Class

Sugar Grove Free Library’s Creative Card Class is offering an introduction to paper quilling class on Saturday, March 22nd from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Come and enjoy learning this Victorian era paper rolling technique by creating three quilled greeting cards. Cost for the class is $10.00. Please contact SGFL at 489-7872 or via email at sgfreelibrary@gmail.com for more information, sign-up and small supplies needed list. If you plan to attend, please bring a sack lunch refreshments will be provided.

Assistance Class

The Sugar Grove Library is hosting a “Bring Your Own Device” Class (BYOD) on March 26. Have problems with your new electronic device your kindle, your iPhone, your tablet? Need to know how to checkout library books electronically? Bring your own device to the library and we can help! Space is limited, so please register by contacting the library by March 20 to register and tell us what kind of device you have. Class Starts at 6:30 p.m.

Book Club

The next Sugar Grove Library Book Club Meeting will be held March 31st. The book chosen is Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson. You have over four full weeks to obtain a copy of the book and join the Sugar Grove Book Club. For more information, stop in the Sugar Grove Free Library.

Community lunches

The Community Lunches in the area continue to be well attended. All lunches begin at 11:30 a.m. Everyone is invited to attend any or all of the area Community lunches. Each month lunch is held on the 1st Friday of the month at the Mission Covenant Church at the corner of Matthews Run and Jackson Run Road. On the 2nd Thursday of each month at the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church located at the corner of Race Street and Jamestown Street in the center of town. On the 3rd Wednesday of the month at the Hessel Valley Lutheran Church located in Chandlers Valley. Everyone is invited to attend.

Murder Under

the Big Top

Eisenhower Knight-time Players will present their 4th annual dinner theatre today and Saturday. Due to continued construction at EHMS, the dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Praise Fellowship Church in Russell. This year’s performance, “Murder Under the Big Top” is a murder mystery written by the director, Mary Passinger. Audience members will have a chance to question suspects and guess who the killer is. The dinner portion will consist of good healthy carnival food including Sausage sandwiches with peppers and onions, Meatball subs, or Beef on Wick sandwiches. In addition guests may choose curly fries with or without cheese or one of the Knight-time Players famous baked potatoes with toppings. The feast will be finished off by a choice of funnel cakes or apple dumplings. Dinners include salad, entrees, dessert, and drinks, as well as popcorn and peanuts. Tickets are available through the main office of EHMS (757-8878), from any cast member or by emailing mary.passinger@gmail.com. Tickets are limited and will not be available at the door. Be sure to buy your ticket early. Cost is $15 for the entire evening.

Registration 2014-15

Registration is now open at the Imaginative Preschool of the Sugar Grove Free Methodist Church for the 2014-15 school year. The preschool has been in operation for more than 25 years and is a wonderful way to start off any child’s education. For more information on class sizes and schedules, feel free to contact director/teacher, Mrs. Julie Harrington at (814) 489-3105.

We Are Bookin’

The Sugar Grove Free Library will once again hold their 5K and 1 Mile Run/Walk on April 26. All proceeds from the event will go to benefit the Library. Race time will begin at 10 a.m. on race day and registration will begins at 9 a.m. at the Library on Harmon Street. All ages are welcome to participate in the event. The race start and finish line will be located on the corner of the Library on School Street.

For the race route, you can contact the Library or stop in. The cost to participate in the 5K is $15 if you register on or before April 18. After April 18 the cost to register will be $20. The cost to participate in the 1-mile fun walk is $10 if you register on or before April 18. After April 18th the cost to register will be $15. T-shirts are guaranteed to all entries received by April 11th.

Blood Drive

The American Red Cross will be holding a blood drive at the Sugar Grove Fire Hall on Wednesday, March 19th beginning at 3 p.m. Please mark your calendars and plan to come and donate blood. Thank You.

EMHS Band fundraiser

A Prize Shoot and Gun Raffle to support the Eisenhower High School Band will be held at the Pine Grove Sportsman’s Club Saturday, March 29 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event will be happening rain or shine. The club is located at 2344 Egypt Hollow Road in Russell. Events will include trap shooting, 22 Luck Shoot, Chinese auction, and raffle drawing. Food and drink will be available. Prizes for the raffle are as follows: 1st Prize Mossberg 535, Camo 12 ga; 2nd Prize – $50 Tall Tales Sporting Gift Certificate; 3rd Prize George Foreman 9-Serving Grill. Tickets are available from band parents and will also be available the day of the event.

Benefit Dinner

There will be a benefit dinner for Jim Kolenda on Saturday, April 5, at the Sugar Grove Free Methodist Church.

Dinner will begin at 5 p.m. The event will feature Ron Carrington and “A Touch of Old” who will be donating live music starting at 6:30 p.m.

Come for dinner and stay for great music. We will be having Chicken and Biscuits served with mashed potatoes, hot vegetables, applesauce, beverages, and a pie buffet for dessert.

There will be Chinese Auction tickets available at the event. The cost is only a donation.

Jim has been diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). All proceeds from the evening will go assist Jim with his medical expenses. If you would like to make a donation to the Chinese auction or a donation to support Jim and his family at this time, please contact the Sugar Grove Free Methodist Church at 489-3105.
