Knights eliminated by Ridgway

CLARION – Ridgway forward Jeremy Breier has done his share of damage to opponents this season.

Friday night was no different.

The 6-foot, 4-inch sophomore poured in 29 points to lead the Elkers over Eisenhower, 62-32, in the first round of the PIAA Class A playoffs at Clarion University’s Tippen Gymnasium.

“(Breier) is quite the ballplayer,” said Ike coach Dave Allenson, whose Knights were outscored in every frame by District 9-champion Ridgway. “They played tough defense and took care of the ball just like we thought they would. They never let us get set up and run our offense. I think they were a little quicker than the kids expected; it’s always hard to judge how quick a team is on tape.”

Ridgway built took a 12-8 lead after the first quarter with 10 of those points coming from Breier. The Elkers pulled further and further away as the game went on thanks to an 18-2 run in the second half.

Eisenhower managed just eight points in each quarter.

Junior guard Ben MacDonald scored 15 points for the Elkers (21-6) to compliment Breier’s 29-point effort. Ridgway was without junior Josh Roselli, who has been a key player this season.

Jarrett Johnson led Ike with eight points and Tre Frank added seven in the loss. The Knights finish the 2013-2014 campaign with an overall record of 15-10.

In other games of interest, District 10-champion Cochranton was defeated by Vincentian Academy, 95-85, and Erie First lost to Monessen in double-overtime, 87-78. Homer-Center topped District 9 runner-up Elk County Catholic in a close first game at Clarion University, 47-45.

It would appear as if all roads in Class A lead to Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School, which advanced to the second round with a 96-47 win over Johnsonburg on Friday. The Leopards are 27-1 on the year, with their only loss coming to Class AAAA New Castle.
