DECA-rated Students

All 16 Warren County Career Center DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) students who traveled to Hershey for the state competition last week won medals.

Some won two or even three medals.

Marketing teacher and DECA advisor Cathie Cummings explained that the students could earn a total of two medals for team events and three medals for individual events.

The students earned medals by excelling in their tests and/or role-playing portion of the events, and returned with a total of 30 medals.

She said, “This was the first year that the Warren County Career Center’s DECA has competed at the state level. We are very proud of the students. They represented the Career Center well. They performed extraordinarily well academically.”

A mini-awards ceremony was held Thursday evening for the medal round, and the top three students in each event won one medal for their test scores and possibly two for role playing.

Sheldon McMeans, a sophomore, had the second highest test score in his event, Principles of Finance.

“The role play requires the students to find a solution to a real-world situation in their business or marketing event and present their solution to a judge,” Cummings said

In the Friday morning awards ceremony, the winners were placed on their overall finish.

Devin Sharp and Rick Hasselman placed sixth overall for the Travel and Tourism Marketing team event.

The students, their individual events, and number of medals are Reilly Franklin, Principles of Finance, 1; Sheldon McMeans, Principles of Finance, 3; Destinee Power, Restaurant and Food Service Management, 1; Alyssa Kotar, Business Services Marketing, 3; Leah Gorgacz, Sports and Entertainment Marketing, 2; and Lauren Frazier, Marketing Management, 2.

In the team competition, Darin Francisco and Jon Shelton, Sports and Entertainment Marketing, 1 each; Shelby Graham and Shannon Saporito, Financial Services, 2 each; Kaitlyn Brown and Emily Ponce, Hospitality Services, 2 each; Bethany See and Amber Skinner, Hospitality Services, 2 each; and Rick Hasselman and Devin Sharp, Travel and Tourism Marketing, 2 each.
