Mr. Richard E. Curtin, 92, Barnes, passed into the next life at 10:30am, Wednesday, February 19, 2014, in Warren Manor following a brief illness.
He was born October 25, 1921 in Barnes, to the late Joseph and Dora Schattenberg Curtin.
A lifelong Barnes resident, Dick led an incredibly rich and active life. He enlisted in the Navy and served from 1942 1945 as an aviation machinist on the USS Cowpens; later, during the Korean Conflict he reenlisted in the naval reserve.
Richard worked for GTE Sylvania for 21 years before operating an Erie Insurance Agency in Sheffield for 14 years.
He was a member of North Star Lodge #241 F&AM, Sheffield VFD, and Sheffield VFW #8755; a formermember of Sheffield Rotary, Board of Directors Ruth M. Smith Center and served as a Sheffield Township Supervisor. Dick was a longtime member of Barnes United Methodist Church and was on various committees.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and volunteering, but his favorite love was spending time with family and friends.
Mr. Curtin is survived by two daughters Nancy Curtin Latimer and husband Myron “Corky”, Barnes and Linda Curtin Anderson and husband William, Warren; two grandchildren Tobin Anderson and wife Jackie and Mary Anderson; one great grandson Richard E. Curtin Anderson; three stepgrandchildren, Tim Latimer and wife Jody, Greg Latimer and wife Dede, and Patrick Latimer and wife Jenifer; six step great grandchildren, Todd Latimer, Taylor Latimer, Valerie Latimer, Ashley Latimer, Lydia Latimer, and Cole Latimer, two sisterin laws, Mabel Curtin and June Curtin; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death on March 5, 2005 by his wife of 60 years, Mayvis Brown Curtin whom he had married August 19, 1944 and four brothers, Lawrence, Charles, Donald, and twin Robert Curtin.
Funeral and committal services will be held on Saturday February 22, 2014 at 2:00pm in Barnes United Methodist Church with Reverend Dennis Johnson, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Barnes Cemetery. Friends will be received at the Barnes church on Friday, February 21, 2014 from 2:004:00 and 6:008:00pm.
