WRESTLING: Seven Dragons advance to semifinals at districts
ERIE – With things going according to plan, Warren had seven wrestlers advance to the semifinals on Friday to start the District 10 Class AAA Championships at Central Tech High School.
“We got everybody through to tomorrow,” said Warren coach Glenn Baldensperger. “I don’t think there were any big surprises for us. Everyone went out and knew what they needed to do, and they did it. Overall, we wrestled well. We just have to go out and get it done tomorrow.”
Advancing to the semis for Warren were: two-time District 10 champion D.J. Fehlman (at 126 pounds) with a pin of Prep’s Brian Stark; Collin DeLattre advances to the semifinals at 132 with a win over Oil City’s Nick Dobson; Dan Henry pinned Central’s Devonte Roberts at 160; Garrett Smead decision General McLane’s Jim Nuhfer, 9-4, at 170 to advance to Saturday’s semis; Cody Gunn earned a decision over McLane’s Adam Steiner at 182 to advance; Derek Reagle also advanced to the semis after a bracket change, beating Oil City’s Brandon Stover at 195; a regional-qualifier last season, Alex Streich is in the semifinals at 220 with a decision over Central’s Seth Brown; Streich wrestles McLane’s Ian Mallory next – they split this season; and, Stephen Crone had a late escape in the third period to beat Prep’s Dominic Kramer and advance.
Alex Weston (106), Blake Ristau (120), Nick DeSimone (138) and Nate Park (152) lost their first matches, but move on to the consolation rounds on Saturday. Seth Johnson won his first match at 145, lost to the top seed, Alex Hargenrader of Oil City, then defeated Nshimiramana Boneventure with an overtime takedown in the consolation rounds to advance to Saturday.
Wrestling begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at Central Tech, with the third-and-fourth-place matches scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and the finals at 5 p.m.
The top four advance to the Northwest Region Class AAA Tournament in two weeks in Altoona.
