A New World Awaits
Kindergarten enrollment is in full swing.
Those families who have arrived bearing the right materials have walked away with “I’m Going to Kindergarten” T-shirts for their future students.
“The shirts will be available at every school holding kindergarten registration,” Youngsville Elementary Middle School Assistant Principal Shannon Yeager said. “In oder to get a shirt the parents had to have a completed registration packet, birth certificate, proof of residency and updated shot records at the time of registration.”
Those who forgot one or more need not worry. Once their registration packets are complete, shirts will be given to all students. “They will get their shirt as soon as their parents provide the missing information to the school,” Yeager said. “The goal is for every in-coming Kindergarten student to receive a shirt. We ordered 315 shirts for the students.”
He said the shirts were made available by contributions from several local donors: Kiwanis Club of Warren; James Doyle, DDS; AmVets Ladies Aux., Sugar Grove; Don Mills Achievement Center; Warren Lions Club; Sons of the American Legion, Sugar Grove; Rotary Club of Warren; Clarendon Veterans Lounge; Youngsville Legion Post 658; Yougnsville Ladies Auxillary Post 658; and Great Expectations.
Free vision screenings are part of the registration program. At YEMS, screenings were provided by the Sight Center of Northwestern Pennsylvania with assistance from the Youngsville Lioness Club. The club also purchased cookies prepared by the Warren County Career Center Food Production and Management Program for the prospective students.
As of Friday, registration numbers were low compared to the current enrollment. According to Director of Pupil Services Ruth Nelson, 43 students registered at Russell Elementary School and there are 40 kindergarten students this year; 38 registered at Allegheny Valley Elementary School compared to 40 current students, and YEMS had 50 students sign up while kindergarten enrollment there is 65. Registration at Sugar Grove Elementary School will be held Tuesday and prospective kindergarten students at Warren Area Elementary Center will register Wednesday and Thursday.
The official kindergarten enrollment for this school year is 331. That was a 19 student increase over the 2012-2013 enrollment of 312 – a change of 6 percent.
